The first time

           Hiroshi Yoshimi

Probably, I was eleven years old and in fifth grade elementary school.

One day I heard the school broadcast announcing “There will be a display of western color prints taking place near the school shop during lunch time. Every one can go there to see and if you like, you can buy them”

At that time, there might have not been enough teaching materials in every school. Some merchant would be selling them in different schools.

The school building was old and made of wood. I still remember the gloomy corridor and the feeling of wet and chilly treads. In those days, we used to walk barefoot inside  in summer or during warm days spring and autumn.

Even now, I don’t know why I went to the display.

I had never seen oil paintings, drawings or even picture books. I knew nothing about paintings. Of course I have not known anything about art or any artist’s name.

There were lots of color prints of the western art almost B4 size. I think there were many great masters' paintings: Da Vinci, Raffaello, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse and etc.

I don’t know why I did chose two prints. Any way I bought them with my pocket money. Their costs might have been around fifty yen. I chose Amedeo Modigliani’s and El Greco’s one.

Now, I believe it was very important primitive sense of mine.

I admired each of them as they were interchangeably displayed in my room for seven or eight years.

After growing up I found the originals.

One was brought from New York to the Modigliani exhibition in Tokyo and Greco’s was at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
